I have my own list of phrases that I think have reached the end of their useful life and should be retired.
- Unpack: “There is a lot to unpack there.” Only makes sense if discussing travel related topics, like suitcases.
- Buckets: “This concept can be divided into several buckets.” Why can’t we just say categories?
- Part of the equation: “That therapy is part of the treatment equation.” I didn’t think we needed to bring math into this.
- Part of the ___ ecosystem: “That is part of the software ecosystem.” Often the term marketplace would be more appropriate.
- Circle back: “We’ll circle back to that topic next week.” Works when discussing NASCAR or carnival rides.
- Level up: “Buy this product to level up your game”. Return to use in video games.
- Space: “This product is doing well in that space.” How about in outerspace?
Personally, I’m finding that I use the term granular too much.
